8 years of adventure

logga respondi in color jpgEight years ago, on Monday October 1st of 2007, was the first day of being self-employed. The first day of operating under the name of Respondi AB, not supported in any way by a boss, an employer, colleagues.

My sense of right-doings had stopped me from actually contacting potential customers to ensure I had an assignment starting October 1st, until I had officially quit my previous employment. I did have a lunch date set up with one though, on this very first day, and I left that meeting with a one-month assignment. That turned into a three year full time gig, in one of the most challenging projects I’ve ever worked with (the building of a greenfield API facility outside Mumbai, India, for those of you who understands that life science-mumbo jumbo).

At the end of that gig, working fewer and fewer hours/week for my client, as the need for me became smaller and smaller (the very best of assignments, in my view, where I slowly make myself unnecessary, as the organization itself get’s to be self-sufficient, constructing and setting in place the structures and routines necessary to function in a good way), I made a decision to train as a coach. And since then, well, life hasn’t been the same. In the very best sense possible!

That also meant I no longer wanted to find long-term full-time assignments, such as the above-mentioned gig, but rather have shorter assignments of a different type. I still have a few ties to the Life Science-industry, but less and less, and I am slowly transitioning out of that business, fully.

That in itself is an interesting journey, it’s like I am actively decommissioning myself from Life Science. It’s like starting a new job, and going through the first time of doing everything, except turned upside down. I’m doing stuff for the last time (at least, that’s my sensation), and am aware of it, which gives it a bit of a bittersweet flavor. It’s my choice though, and I know it’s the right one for me. Now I just have to learn to say No when asked to hang on a bit longer in the industry…. and that might well be my toughest challenge here. Have you got any experience with this process of slowly retracting from a specific industry/business to share with me?

On compassion

compassion

Continuing my collaboration with Sus and her marvelous ladies, prompted by a query from my coach on yesterday’s doodle on judgement. She read what I’d written and added: …and practice self-compassion for our sweet, humble humanity when we notice we have ”fallen into judgment” yet again….

She continued with wondering what my compassion sketch would look like, and that thought crept into my conscious mind during this morning’s meditation. So I brought out my IPad, Paper and Pen, and started doodling. A few botched attempts, and then I sent the text above out into MIX. Send a note to Sus asking if she was up for another collaboration. She said she’d gladly give it a go, and immediately got it right, with little Miss Balancing-Act above.

That’s what it can feel like for me, balancing in life. Putting one feet out in front of me, not knowing if I’ll wobble and fall, or stand steady, ready for the next foot to move ahead. But the real balancing act is about meeting both situations (the wobbly as well as the steady journey ahead) with compassion, for me, and for everyone else.

Realizing how I’m not the only one stumbling through life – occasionally falling down, sometimes in a flow – but this goes for everyone. We are all balancing our way through life. All of us.

Now, there’s a thought to sit with…

Selecting a teacher

Selecting a Teacher
There are so many teachers in the world and so many theories about life.
When selecting a teacher, ask yourself…
Is my teacher a well-balanced person? Is she or he happy?
Does my teacher reflect and demonstrate the quality of life I desire?
If the answer to any of these questions is no, move on in your journey.
Otherwise you may become one of the blind, led by the blind.
Sydney Banks, from The Missing Link

You can exchange the word teacher with other words, such as guide, coach, leader, boss, spiritual guide, enabler. The word doesn’t really matter anyway, but oh, how these words ring true for me.

I remember Lama Kathy Wesley stating in one of my favorite podcasts how important she felt it to be to look at the elders of any tradition of faith that you found interesting. By their appearance, health, harmony, you know, whether or not to venture forth into that tradition or not. In a nutshell, she’s stating exactly the same thing as Syd Banks is pointing to.

And at the same time, well-balanced doesn’t mean a person who is ”perfect”, and never gets out of whack. On the contrary, I would say. I do not require my teacher, coach, guide (yeah, you get it! That whatever-word you place here!) to be ”a perfect human being”, in the meaning that they do not live the human experience.

Because that’s part of the trick for me – living life, experiencing all the up’s and down’s of human experience, and doing it with grace, with balance (that is, returning to balance when off-centered for a moment or two), and a lot of love, laughter and light. Tears commingle with laughter, grief with ecstatic joy, boredom with the feeling of flow where time seemingly disappears. All of that is part of the human experience, but how I live into it, or perhaps, how I live out of it, is what tells a well-balanced person apart for me.

BoldomaticPost_Selecting-a-Teacher-There-areWriting this, I just had an insight.

This quote isn’t only about looking for external teachers. It’s also a great reminder to myself, on my ability to be my own guide and enabler.

When I am well-balanced, happy, reflecting and demonstrating the qualities of life that I desire – then I am a good teacher for myself.

And when I am the opposite (off-centered, miserable, definitely not demonstrating the qualities of life I desire, but rather the opposite), it serves me well to remember to take myself a lot less seriously, as it’s as if I am one of the blind, leading myself. And boy does it hurt when I stumble into all sorts of obstacles along the way, attempting to lead my blind self. In situations like that, the best thing I can do is to pause, to stop in my tracks, and wait for vision to return. Go about my day, doing the routine things that I can do blind-folded, staying clear of making radical decisions, and not expecting too much of myself either. It’s not always easy though.

So am I the only one dumb enough to try to lead myself even when I am in no shape to lead?

What if I forgave myself?

Just finished watching Wild, the movie with Reese Witherspoon, based on the true story (made into a book) by Cheryl Strayed, who hikes the Pacific Crest Trail after her life unravelled following her mom’s death and a divorce.

Two things really hit home. One is kind of soft and mushy, romantic and drippy even. It’s what Cheryl’s mom used to say, possibly her life motto even:

sunset

I especially like that last line: You can put yourself in the way of beauty. And it’s simple, because beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. So it is possible for me to see beauty everywhere. I can put myself in the way of beauty wherever I am.

The other thing from Wild that I take with me after watching it is something that I’ve reflected a lot upon these past months of the #cleanse4expansion-project: forgiveness.

What if I forgave myself?, I thought. What if I forgave myself even though I’d done something I shouldn’t have? […] What if what made me do all those things everyone thought I shouldn’t have done was what also had got me here? What if I was never redeemed? What if I already was?

For me, the process of looking at forgiveness generates the feeling of expanding, it’s transformative. And I know, there are more areas where the question lies dormant, waiting to be asked:

What if I forgave myself?

Dance through life

During a coaching session last week with my coach, she said:

Dance with whatever knocks at your door.

It’s a phrase someone had told her once, I believe, and it hit me hard. In a good way, I might add.

The way I see it, I don’t control what comes knocking on my door. Chance, fate, serendipity, accident, coincidence…. whatever you want to call it, I don’t have control over it. But I can chose to dance with it, whatever it is. That’s a choice I have. It might not be my preferred dance partner, it might not be the dance of my choice, but regardless of that, I can dance with it.

dance with whateverI get to dance.

That’s what I realized during that coaching session.
I get to dance. With whatever comes knocking at my door. And I love to dance. I really really love it, so thinking about life in this way, that I get to dance with whatever comes knocking on my door, makes me all tingly inside. I can dance through life!

Life doesn’t get much better than that, does it?

Responsibility

What is responsibility?
What does it mean?
How do I act responsibly?
And why do I have such strong attachment to the word, with a heavy feeling of sorts attached to it?

Those are but a few of the questions that arose a while ago, during a coaching call with my coach. Since then, I’ve toyed with the word, played with the concept, observed my feelings, written about it in my journal, and also spoken again and again with my coach about it, but also brought it up in other conversations.

I’ve gotten more insight. I’ve discovered the story I was telling myself about being responsible, and why it is ”something I have to do”. No wonder it had a heavy feel to it!

If I think responsibility is a heavy burden to bear, a must, something one should do, it’s only logical that it will have a very heavy feel to it.

And you know what? It doesn’t have to.

The more I’ve sat with the word, I’ve realized responsibility can feel very light as well. It all depends on my state of mind. When I am in a low state of mind, I feel alone, having to carry the weight of responsibility all by myself. When, on the other hand, I am in a high state of mind, I feel connected to the Whole, to Mind, to whatever connects us all to each other (also when I’m in a low state of mind, mind you! Only when I’m low, I lose sight of the connection that is always there, as if I’ve gotten lost).

When I’m aware of the connection, feeling connected, responsibility is light as a feather. It’s as if I am no longer the only one to carry my load, like I’m larger than life, and no burden is too heavy. My self is so expanded, so connected to the energies of Mind, that I’m sharing the weight with everyone. Light. As a feather.

feather

I like the new relationship with Responsibility that I am exploring. What is Responsibility to you? Is it heavy? Or light as a feather?

Bye bye 2014!

Another year has passed and what a year. A year of transformation, a year in which I integrated myself into myself. A year unlike any other, so I’m curious about what will show up in my mind, when I set out to oom out to see what the year has offered.

SCA2014
During 2014 I participated in Supercoach Academy, which undoubtedly has had an enormous impact on my life. It has given me so much insight, so many experiences, immensely valuable friendships. Life will never be the same. And I’m grateful for it!

#afkAlmedalen
#skolvåren has obviously been a big part of my life even in 2014 and I remember with special warmth how amazing it was to experience Almedalsweekwith so so many #schoolspringers, all of which have a permanent place in my heart. In a short while we head for #afkUmeå and I can hardly wait!

Peak District
During the summer holidays the Roths traveled to England. No definite plans apart from start/stop in Ely, where we have family. Turned out to become a wonderful trip up to the Peak District. I particularly remember a visit to a deep mine and subsequent wanderings along the rolling hills dotted with sheep. The beauty of nature never sieze to amaze me!

Mastermind gang
A new constellation and astonishingly important for me. Never before have I so clearly understood the importance of creating contexts that challenge me to be and become my best self. Without you all, this year would be much less than it has been. You hold a space for me in which to grow, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Appreciation Calendar
Read a blog post a few months before Christmas on creating an appreciation calendar, which I decided upon. All four family members were given an envelope and in it we collectively penned 24 appreciations for each one of us. If you have not tried it, I highly recommend it, because it really creates an opportunity to experience, and share, gratitude.

Chicks
This is the year we got chicks! This monumental event has a definitive spot in the summary of 2014. Our three hens of the breed Faverolle, are so beautiful, and so talkative it’s funny. And did they ever grow quickly!! No eggs in sight as yet, but we are eagerly awaiting them now that daylight begins to return more and more.

Coach Carla
Carla is one of my SCA2014-colleagues, who made a big impression upon me, already the first weekend in Santa Monica. I hired her as my coach this fall and am forever grateful for the opportunity to work with her. She holds such depth. Such a compassion for beings. And her soul is beautiful. Not to mention her amazing voice. Namaste Carla, I look forward to continuing to work with you during the 2015.

Podcasts
I’ve read a huge amount of blog posts during the last 5-6 years …. but in 2014, I basically did not follow any blog. I’ve read a post here, a post there, but not opened my Feedly at all. Instead I dove headfirst into the world of podcasts. And oh, how many amazing podcasts there are out there!

Lifeline
You know who you are. You know, hopefully, how important you are. You are always there for me and I’m moved to tears just writing this. You are so important to me. Love you!

Expectations
Steve Chandler talk for 25 minutes about expectations versus agreements, and of all the pods I listened to in 2015 this is perhaps the one that turned my world upside down the most, in the very best of ways!

Significant meetings
Thanks to SCA2014 I have also visited highschool friends (Apple Valley and Seattle) that I haven’t seen in 24 years. I met up with a good friend from the American South, whom I met 20 years ago online, but had never met away from keyboard before. We did New York for a few days, days filled with laughter and explorations. And I had the pleasure to enjoy the company of Max and Mary for a couple of relaxing days on Long Island.

100 conversations challenge
In August, I initiated a 30-day challenge to find 100 people who all wanted to participate in a two-hour free coaching conversation with me. I filled the list with 100+ and have never had so many conversations ever, as I’ve had this fall. A small portion of the conversations remains to be had, and I eagerly look forward to resume them after the holidays. People have abilities and experiences that amaze me, and it makes me humbly grateful to take part of them, for two hours. For it has indeed been magical. Fantastic. Educational. Touching. Uplifting. Developing.

thanks 2014What I mention here is just a fraction of everything I experienced during the year and they are not set in any type of order. Fully random, this is what felt important to highlight, as I write this. But if I try to summarize what my perception of my life right now is, I’d have to say that I now live life with appreciation, love and joy. I discover what it is like to live when I have a kind and loving inner dialogue, in a quite outrageously developing and embracing context and I feel really alive.

So to all whom I have met, in one way or another, in 2014, I want to give you my deepest thanks, a thank you coming from my innermost being.

Thank you! You are important to me!

Game-Changer

Feeling a bit jitterish, but at the same time: there’s nothing more for me to do. It’s out of my hands, and all I can do is be me. And that’s something which I definitely practice a lot more nowadays, compared to most of my life.

It’s a change I am very happy about, even though it might be a bit troublesome for my surroundings, as the Helena they believed they knew, acts differently these days. That difference is me. That difference is me being me. That difference is me, more pure, raw, undiluted. The Helena they knew was a person faking it. Believing I had to put on a mask, act in certain ways, not true to me, but true to the show I believed was expected of me. That Helena was never me. And it’s not who I am today.

AwarenessAnd then this post popped into my stream today, giving me back that which I had temporarily forgotten.

‘What?’, you may ask.

I’d forgotten that this is what it’s all about. Not to coach. Not to fix (there’s nothing to fix!). But to be a Game-Changer. And I am.

And you know? That’s not just a brash statement from me. That’s not something I believe to be true. I don’t have to believe it. Because I’ve tested it. I know I have helped clients see things they couldn’t see before. I know I’ve held a space for clients to go deeper and purer than they have ever gone before. It happens. Not all the time, every time I see a client. Not by a long shot. But when it happens – BAM, that IS a game-changer, let me tell you!

Remember that jitterish feeling? I’ll just hug it, but I definitely won’t cling to it. Because it doesn’t provide much value to me at the moment. And what I know to be true, I know to be true.

Are You a Game-Changer?

The What of a Transformative Coach

The other week my Supercoach Academy-colleague Steve M Nash posted a link explaining what a transformational coach does, and I rejoiced at the simplicity and beauty of it…. while also succumbing to darker thoughts of envy…. because if ever there was a blog post I wished I had written myself, it’s this one!

He starts of with an introduction, about the anguish of trying to explain what a transformative coach does, and knowing him, I can hear his voice speaking these words:

Steves party piece

Alas, much to my regret I didn’t write that article, but luckily enough, I know Steve so at least I got to read it, and I urge you to do so yourself. It’s a great explaination of transformational coaching, and also points at the amazing potential that is within us all, each and every one of us.

All the links I’ve created within this blog post links directly to Steves post, but just to be superclear, click here and read it for yourself, all the way through: http://www.smnash.com/transformative-coach/

answer within

So if that didn’t spark your curiosity to contact Steve, or me, here’s a final question for you:
If everything you need is already within you, what might be possible then?
