Podcast 3/52 – Selfie anyone?

In this age of selfies, wefies. selfie sticks and the likes, it might be refreshing to listen to this gem from the RSA Events on From the self to the selfie. I listened to this podcast 3-4 months ago. I truly enjoyed the historical backdrop that gave me some new angles to consider while reflecting upon the whole notion of self-love. Simon Blackburn has written a book called Mirror, Mirror: The Uses and Abuses of Self-Love that I’m curious about, after having listened to this talk.

selfiesAnd as I opened Boldomatic to create an image for this blog post (considering ”From the self to the selfie”) this is what’s at the top of my feed.

A world

with a little
less selfies

and a little
more selfless.

Well. What to say other than that I’m hoping more people will listen to this podcast (and don’t miss out on the Q&A starting about half way in, as often is the case, that part is often extra interesting to listen to). If nothing else, because I think it’s too easy a route to take to ”blame the selfies”, judging them and the habit of taking them as being egotistical and self-centered. Without taking into consideration the intent behind it, there’s no way for me to know. And I prefer to avoid unnecessary generalizations, if I can.

What’s your take on selfies? Do you take and post them yourself?
Are there too many of them? Are selfies wrong/bad/evil? What do they tell you about the person posting it?

Podcast 2/52 – On habits

You already know that The One You Feed is a favorite podcast of mine, so maybe it’s no surprise to you that I’ll include an episode from there early on in this yearlong series. But this is a mini-episode, where Eric Zimmer talks about building habits. It’s a short episode really just summarizing Erics best tips for how to build a habit successfully.

I won’t reveal all the different suggestions, except my favorite tip, which is one of the last ones: Never miss twice. Because I’m sure you, as well as I, have started to create a habit some time, only to realize all of a sudden that we´ve missed a day. Rather than beat yourself up over it and/or toss it all away, going There’s no point to it, I just missed a day, I’ll never be able to get this habit in please go Never miss twice instead. That is a loving and forgiving way to look at yourself and building of habits, because who cares if you miss a day? I mean, really. What’s the big deal? It’s like getting tossed off a horse, get back on again!never miss twice

I hope you listen to the podcast, and come back next Sunday for the next podcast tip.

Which one was your favorite tip? And are there any tips you have on building a habit that wasn’t on Erics list, that you’d like to share?

Podcast 1/52 – Quiet places

VejbystrandWalking along the beautiful coastline of Vejbystrand just before New Years I listened to the most amazing episode from On Being, featuring acoustic ecologist (you’re in good company, I had no idea there was such a thing either!) Gordon Hempton sharing his love for nature and both sound and silence.

He speaks about silence not meaning the absence of sound, but rather the absence of noise. And the conversation Gordon and Krista have about the last quiet places really shook me up. I urge you to listen, and see if you get shook up as well. It made me realize that noise pollution really is all around us, and I’ve never really gave it proper consideration before. Did you?

Listen for the unknown #6

Hope you heard something new to you in #5. Otherwise, here’s your final chance, with the sixth and final of these podcast recommendations.

I’m leaving off with one of my absolute favorite RSA Event pods that I’ve listened to a multitude of times. Scilla Elworthy was unknown to me first time I stumbled upon this talk, but she’s been nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Price so obviously she’s made her mark in the world. Listen to her making a case for Pioneering the possible.

Turns out I’ll stick to three podcasts – RSA Events, On being, and The One You Feed. There are so many podcasts that I like. Hence, I’ve just decided to run a Sunday series all throughout 2015 with podcast recommendations!

But it’s still 2014, and yesterday in #4 we left off with an episode from On Being. Today, it’s time for yet another one from The One You Feed, an episode with Emilia Zhivotovskaya.

Why not stay where we left of with #3 yesterday with On being? Here’s another podcast from the same show, or actually, it’s old enough to be from Speaking of faith, which is what On being was called before. It’s been a few years since I first heard this specific podcast, and it’s remained with me since then. I just relistened to it and it’s as rich and rewarding today, as it was first time I listened to it. I remembered it to be called Being autistic, being human, but it turns out the episode is called Autism and humanity.

Curious if you, like me, heard anything that stopped you dead in your tracks when you listened to the podcast from The One You Feed in #2?

Today, on to another of my absolute favorite podcasts, that I just realised I haven’t listened to all year. Most definitely want to change that for 2015, because On Being with Krista Tippitt holds loads of unknowns for me. Here’s lots to listen for, that I’ve never heard before, and Kristas style of being in conversation during her interviews is right up my alley.

Here’s an episode called Inner life at work, with guest Tami Simon.

I hope you enjoyed listening to the podcast from RSA Event called Life, Death, Self and Soul that I recommended in #1. This time, I’m hoping you will hear something new in an episode of The One You Feed featuring Andrew Solomon. I listened to it while taking a lovely winter walk with Trassel the dog, and I actually stopped dead in my tracks at one time (around ten minutes from the end).

Adventslyft nr 8 – Tacksamhet

Adventslyft nr 3 – Skuggsidan

Min bror mailade mig och frågade ”Följer du Serial the podcast?”.
