Forgotten promises

My husband came walking up the stairs from the basement, with his IPad in hand, playing a tune. He sat down in the sofa, the song ended and he said ”I’ve heard something else by this artist before, I wonder if it’s this song?”, clicked on another tune on YouTube, and then this song started:

I’ve been listening to it now, over and over, and it touches my heart. Sami Yusuf have totally passed me by, but not anymore.

Tonight the world will sleep
But hunger will not wait
For promises we made
We share one soul
We share one land
We have one time to understand

We are one humankind
Brothers side by side
We’ll have no regret
We will not forget
We are one humankind
Sisters side by side
We’ll have no regret
We will not forget

That is so beautiful, and the song is just that, absolutely beautiful.

I believe in the power of music. I believe in the power of arts, and art can be many things. Would you like to share a piece of art with me, that has made a difference in your life?

Obedience!

Saw part of a quote on Facebook, posted by True Activist.20131113-142317.jpgHere’s the quote, spoken by Banksy, in its totality:

The greatest crimes in the world are not committed by people breaking the rules. It’s people who follow orders that drop bombs and massacre villages. As a precaution to ever committing major acts of evil it is our solemn duty never to do what we’re told, this is the only way we can be sure.

I would lie if I said it isn’t ”easier” with obedient people. Of course it is. Obedient people don’t ask Why, they don’t challenge me, they don’t talk back or question my actions or orders.

Children, by their very nature, seems to be full of Why’s. But something happens along the way to adulthood, somewhere the desire and curiosity sparking the question Why is trampled upon, frowned upon, ridiculed, considered a nuisance. So the children, as a means to survive, stop asking Why. They hold their tongue, and slowly start to die, to become something other than themselves. Finally the day comes when they have forgotten their true self, and have completely conformed to a society demanding their obedience.

But beware the inherent danger that comes along with said obedience!

I’d much rather have a world full of people asking Why, than a world full of obedient people blindly following orders. Which world would you prefer? And what steps are you taking to creating that world?

Dust if you must

There’s a poem written by Rose Milligan of Lancaster, England, that goes like this:

Dust if you must
but wouldn’t it be better
to paint a picture, or write a letter,
bake a cake, or plant a seed;
ponder the difference between want and need.

Dust if you must
but there is not much time,
with rivers to swim and mountains to climb!
Music to hear, and books to read,
friends to cherish and life to lead.

Dust if you must
but the world’s out there
with the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair,
a flutter of snow, a shower of rain;
this day will not come round again.

Dust if you must
but bear in mind,
old age will come and it’s not kind.
And when you go,
and go you must…
You, yourself, will make more dust.

20130923-122822.jpgI am not much for dusting, and I can’t say I’ve ever felt that dusting is a must. But there are those who do. And that’s not better or worse than not feeling the urge to dust. But put it in the right perspective – do what you do for you, because it serves you and not because it’s a must.

Are your musts interfering with you living life to it’s fullest?

Embrace the shake!

Thank you Alan Seale for this great TED:

What an amazing story, providing profound insights into life. The ability to learn to embrace the shake (watch and you’ll find out exactly what this means!) is in a sense, an example of taking control of your own life. Phil Hansen truly embraces his limitation as an artist, and in doing so, realized the world is limitless.

He continues to state:

What I thought would be the ultimate limitation actually turned out to be the ultimate liberation.

Have you embraced your limitations?

Me and Buddha

Tired after a round trip to Stockholm I almost forgot to blog. Luckily Buddha reminded me!

20131002-202814.jpg

He sent me these words to bring with me to bed / as I am tired, I am listening to my body and mind and are heading for bed! Clever huh?

Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared. – Buddha

Have you lit any candles today?

Powerful story!

Oh my, just listened to Kemp Powers story on The Moth, entitled ”The past wasn’t done with me”, and even though I have blogged already today, I just need to get this out of my system, ASAP.

20130919-152655.jpg

This is a story worth hearing, or reading for that matter, and I urge you to do just that! If you haven’t discovered The Moth before, now’s a good time. Stories told live on stage without notes, is the tag line, and I’ve listened to some great stories, let me tell you.

When was the last time a story rocked your world?

Build a life

Ashton Kutcher was given a Teen Choice Award August 11th 2013, and when accepting the price he gave a speech. If you haven’t watched it, please do:

One of the most profound things in this short speach, is the message Ashton get Steve Jobs gave Ashton:

When you grow up, you tend to get told that the world is the way that it is. And that your life is to live your life inside the world and try not to get into too much trouble, and maybe get an education, and get a job, and make some money and have a family. But life can be a lot broader than that, when you realize one simple thing. And that is that everything around us that we call life was made up by people that are no smarter than you. And you can build your own things, you can build your own life that other people can live in. So build a life, don’t live one! – Steve Jobs, paraphrased by Ashton Kutcher

Are you building your life?
